The Battle of the Beauty Oils
Walk into any natural beauty store and you’ll find shelves lined with botanical facial oils. Two of the most popular are rosehip seed oil and argan oil — both praised as “liquid gold” for skin, and both with impressive scientific backing. But they are quite different in their composition and best uses. Here’s how to decide which is right for you.
What Is Rosehip Oil?
Rosehip seed oil is extracted from the seeds of rose bushes, primarily Rosa canina and Rosa moschata, which grow in Chile, South Africa, and Europe. It is cold-pressed from the seeds left after the rose hips (fruits) have been used for their Vitamin C content. Rosehip oil is uniquely rich in: retinoic acid (natural Vitamin A/retinol), linoleic acid (omega-6), alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3), Vitamin C, and lycopene.
What Is Argan Oil?
Argan oil is cold-pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. It is rich in oleic acid (omega-9), linoleic acid (omega-6), Vitamin E (tocopherols), and polyphenols.
Key Differences
Anti-Aging: Rosehip wins here — its natural retinol (Vitamin A) is clinically proven to stimulate collagen production and reduce wrinkles more effectively than argan oil.
Hydration: Argan oil wins — its high oleic acid content provides deeper, longer-lasting moisture especially for dry and mature skin.
Brightening: Rosehip wins — its Vitamin C and retinoic acid fade pigmentation and dark spots faster.
Acne-Prone Skin: Rosehip wins — its high linoleic acid content is proven to regulate sebum production. Acne-prone skin tends to be deficient in linoleic acid.
Dry or Mature Skin: Argan wins — the higher oleic acid is more occlusive and protects the skin barrier better in dry conditions.
Stability: Argan wins — rosehip oil oxidizes faster due to its high linoleic acid and should be kept refrigerated after opening.
The Verdict
For anti-aging, brightening, and acne: use Rosehip Oil (our Rosehip Brightening Cream). For deep moisture, barrier protection, and all-around nourishment: use Argan Oil (our Argan Oil Face Serum). For best results: use both! Apply rosehip oil first (lighter, thinner texture) then seal with argan oil on top.
